NOTES FOR SUPPLEMENTARIES
DISCUSSIONS WITH THE GOVERNOR OF HONG KONG
1.
The Governor was in London for consultations last week.
He reported on the serious situation in Hong Kong to my
right honourable Friends the Prime Minister and the Foreign
and Commonwealth Secretary, and had discussions with other
Ministers on 17 June. There were 54,178 boat refugees in
Hong Kong, of whom 13,390 had arrived this month. The
Government considers that pressure on Hong Kong caused by the
continuing flow of refugees from Vietnam can only be relieved
by concerted international action of the kind for which we
are pressing.
MILITARY REINFORCEMENTS
2. The possibility of providing reinforcements for the
Hong Kong Garrison was raised during consultations with the
Governor and is now under consideration by my right honourable
Friend the Secretary of State for Defence. This is in the
context of the serious problem of illegal immigration from
China and not of Vietnamese refugees.
