CONFIDENTIAL
PRIME MINISTER'S VISIT TO CANBERRA : 30 JUNE to 1 JULY
PROBABLE AUSTRALIAN OBJECTIVES
1. To establish a good working relationship with the Prime Minister. In domestic terms Mr Fraser needs to show that he is not neglecting his relations with us (although he has to avoid any sign of undue susceptibility to UK influence), and to demonstrate that he is a
leader of world stature.
2. To discuss the CHGM; to persuade the Prime Minister not to take a line on Rhodesia (and Namibia) which could disrupt the CHGM
or the Commonwealth itself.
3.
To have a first-hand account of the Tokyo meeting.
4. To exchange views on developments in Asia, including Vietnam
refugees.
5.
To discuss Soviet global policies, and defence matters.
6.
To emphasise the importance of the EEC (and the UK in particular) as a market for Australian exports (including coking coal for the British Steel Corporation, if this issue has not by then been. resolved).
7. To seek further UK support for Australian policies for cheap
end-to-end air fares.
8. To explain Australia's sympathies for third world aspirations, especially in the North/South dialogue.
