VIETNAMESE REFUGEES
Mr Cyril Smith MP telephoned the Lord Privy Seal's office
this morning to pass on
to pass on an offer from a Mr Rubins, owner and Managing Director of the Alder-glen Manufacturing Company, Rochdale, to employ and accommodate a small number of Vietnamese
refugees who came to this country for resettlement. Mr Smith understood that 14 refugees could be employed and given housing
by Mr Rubins' textile mill in Rochdale. He was offering employ-
ment to a further 10 in the South of England, but it was not
clear how their accommodation needs would be met or what
employment was envisaged. Mr Rubins lived in the South of England and Mr Smith thought that he might be offering domestic
service.
Mr Smith said that he could vouch for Mr Rubins, who
employed 400 people in Rochdale, and thought that there would be no problem with regard to the acceptance of the Vietnamese
by the work force. I thanked Mr Smith warmly for this offer and said that I would let you have the details since the Home Office
would be initially responsible for the resettlement programme.
It is now open to your office to get in touch directly with Mr Rubins, whose telephone number is Rochdale 46721.
Yours ever,
зам
