Dear Pat,

VIETNAMESE REFUGEES AND IMMIGRATION IN THE U K

During the recent visit of Ambassador Clark, the S Refugee Coordinator, we were pressed fairly hard (as you will see from separate correspondence) on why the UK corld not take more refugees from Hong Kong. I re fero the high level of immigration in the UK in recent years from traditional areas of responsibility such as the New Commonwealth and Pakistan. However, the only figures I have been able to find here are 48,000 for settlement in the UK in 1976 from the New Commonwealth and Pakistan and 28,000 from the New Common- weal h in 1977. I should be grateful if you could ask the ome office to provide some comprehensive statistical mate ial covering immigration into the UK for the years 1975 to 1978. It would be extremely helpful if these figu es could also show separately tables for :

(a) efugees from Indo-China by country, showing

oat refugees separately; and

(b)

efugees from other countries.

Yours ever

Iain
