ITALIAN PROGRAMME FOR REFUGEES FROM VIETNAM
You will see from the attached copy of
David Wilson's letter to the Italian Consul-General here that one family has at last been found to go to Italy following an offer nade in the aftermath 02 che arrival here of the "HUEY PONG". We are encouraged to hope that more refugees can be accepted in Italy from Hong Kong by the press report that the Prime minister had said on 7 Hay that Italy was ready to receive "adequate numbers" of Vietnamese refugeas and that the question would be discussed at an inter- Ministerial conference. we should be grateful for anything you can do to encourage the Italians to come up with as generous an offer as possible, In urging on them the claims of refugees in Hong Kong, you will no doubt draw on the statistics given in our telegram no. 528 of 4 May (saving to Rome). This can now be updated with the latest stark figures: in the first ten days of Kay, we had 4,456 arrivals in small boats.
