To follow up the approaches to the Indonesians by
Sir James Murray in Geneva and our Ambassador in Jakarta, Mr Cortazzi summoned the Indonesian Ambassador in London on
1 May and spoke along the Lines of Mr Murray's teleletter of 20 April to Jakarta.
2.
To ensure that the Indonesian Ambassador properly understood our view, Mr Cortazzi offered to summarise his remarks in a letter; I submit a draft.
3.
Since the discussion with the Indonesian Ambassador I have seen Mr Morgan's record of his telephone conversation with Mr Furness of 1 May. From paragraph 2 of that record, and from paragraph 2 of Jakarta telegram No 118, it seems to me that there is some danger of our Embassy in Jakarta pressing the Hong Kong case less than wholeheartedly. I have taken this into account in drafting the attached telegram.
