Eastern Europe this year, we are about to run out
of funds for all of our programs.
Without the
funds in the supplemental budget requests now be-
fore the Congress, we will be forced to end refugee
assistance around the first of June. We have
already been forced to reduce refugee resettlement
programs. All funds for care and maintenance of
refugees from the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe
now in Rome awaiting processing and departure for
the United States are exhausted.
Without renewed funding, this situation will
lead to further human suffering. And it may cause
serious political problems with the countries now
providing first asylum for the evergrowing refugee
populations. I urge this Committee to act on the
Administration's supplemental and reprogramming
requests as soon as possible.
