would support any measure that would end the fighting but the time for mediation was when the adversaries were tired of fighting. It was better not to think too many moves ahead. Dr Mochtar went out of his way at the end of the press conference to commend Mr Sonoda for his contribution in emphasising the political role which Japan could play in the world. The example of Iran had shown that economic strength was not enough, and Japan as a great economic power should pay more attention to political questions. Mr Sonoda's efforts in this direction had been welcomed in Asia.
