You are, I am sure, aware of the initiative of the Oberbürger- meister of Frankfurt, Dr Walter Wallmann, to take 310 Vietnamese refugees ex-Hong Kong for resettlement here. The matter has received a good deal of publicity locally although what it has done for Dr Wallmann's political image is difficult to say. Anyway, he has invested a lot of time and goodwill in the subject so I thought it worthwhile to send him for information a copy of Lord Goronwy Roberts' recent speech in the House of Lords about the refugee problem in Hong Kong. This produced a letter of acknowlegement from the Oberbürgermeister's special assistant, Dr Alexandar Gauland, paying tribute among other things to the help which he, Dr Gauland, received from the Hong Kong authorities when he was there arranging for the Vietnamese refugees to come to Frankfurt.
