Indochinese refugees: new arrivals and resettlement

According to figures available on 15 February, 3,466 'boat people' arrived during the first half of this month bringing the cumulative total to 117,858, of whom some 47,000 have been resettled. (See Refugee Update No.1)

Among the new arrivals are 2,047 in Malaysia (total 76,343), 698 in Thailand (15,490), and 656 in the Philippines (5,424). Although only 15 landed in Hong Kong (total 9,888), there are 2,637 refugees aboard the Skyluck, the latest refugee ship to arrive there Since 31 January, 32 persons have disembarked from the ship Tung An in Manila and are to be resettled; 2,071 people are still on board.

In addition to the regular selection activities by the main receiving countries (Australia, Canada, France, USA), Indochinese refugees are now in the process of being selected for resettlement by Denmark, the Federal Republic of Germany, New Zealand, Sweden and the United Kingdom. In its first Iresettlement offer so far, Brazil is taking a small number of Indochinese refugees this month. The repatriation of Burmese refugees from camps in Bangladesh continued during February. As of 12 February 1979, 70, 170 Burmese refugees had returned to their homes in Arakan State, where they are being helped to settle down. series of measures recently undertaken to control malnutrition and disease in the camps in Bangladesh (see Refugee Update No.1) have now been fully implemented.

Refugee movements in Africa

The total number of Southern African refugees being currently assisted by UNHCR has doubled since the beginning of last year, reaching 203,000.

Contributions to UNHCR Programmes

During his recent meeting with the Commission of the European Economic Community, the High Commissioner was informed that the EEC would make sub- stantial new contributions, especially to UNHCR programmes in South East Asia and Southern Africa. During the course of this visit, Mr. Hartling was also informed that Belgium intends to double its contribution to UNHCR as from 1980.

In the largest donation ever nado to UNHCR by a voluntary agency, the Swedish Save the Children Federation, Rädda Barnen, announced a contribution of $2.4 million. The President of Rädda Barnen, Mrs. Anér, made the statement at a press conference given at the inauguration of a world children's art exhibition held under the auspices of UNHCR in Geneva.

On the occasion of the International Year of the Child, UNHCR published a compendium on The Refugee Child. The first donation for one of the projects outlined in it was made by the Finnish Refugee Council.
