REQUEST FROM THE HONG KONG GOVERNMENT FOR ASSISTANCE WITH AIR RECONNAISSANCE

Reference: Hong Kong Signal 0907252 Mar 79

1. Most addressees will already have received a copy of the Reference; a copy is attached for those who may not. The signal asks that the Canberra PR7, which is at present at Hong Kong for air reconnaissance tasks in connection with Vietnamese refugees, be retained until "about 3 April".

2. I assume that if we were to accede to this request, the overall rate of £800 per flying hour already quoted to the Hong Kong Government would continue to apply.

3.

As the signal points out, our agreement would preclude the Canberra's participation in the IADS exercise scheduled for 21 and 22 Mar.

4.

I would be grateful to know if addressees have any objection to our agreeing to the Hong Kong Government's request; telephoned comments would be appreciated by noon on Wednesday 14 Mar, after when it will be assumed that there is no objection.
