NUMBERS OF INDOCHINESE WHO HAVE SOUGHT ASYLUM IN VARIOUS
COUNTRIES SINCE 1975 (figures as at 31 December 1978)
(a) Land cases
A
Thailand
A total of 201,653 persons crossed into Thailand from Laos, Cambodia (and Viet Nam) from April/May 1975 to the end of 1978. Of these 60,339
were registered in 1978. Over the 3-year period, 67,857 of these "land
cases" departed for resettlement, leaving a caseload of 135,539 of whom
119,398 wer Lao, 14,514 Cambodians and 1,627 Vietnamese. It should be
noted that the Vietnamese "land cases" were people living in Laos prior
to the events which caused them to seek asylum in Thailand.
(b) Land cases Viet Nam
Some 150,000 Cambodians (Kampucheans) fled into Viet Nam following
the fall of Phnom Penh in April 1975 or in more recent months.
Of these,
approximately 3,000 have been assisted to leave for resettlement in
France over the past 18 months or so.
(c) Boat cases
