For 1979, we have
pledged £3.5 million so far and will, as always,
as always, sympathetically
consider the High Commissioner's special appeals whenever they are
made.
DO THE GOVERNMENT ACCEPT THAT THEY HAVE A PARTICULAR RESPONSIBILITY TO HELP HONG KONG IN ARRANGING THE RESETTLEMENT OF THE LARGE NUMBERS OF VIETNAMESE REFUGEES WHO HAVE BEEN GIVEN TEMPORARY ASYLUM THERE?
11.
Yes: that is why we have agreed that 1,000 out of the 1,500
1,50
Vietnamese refugees who are to be admitted to Britain should come
from Hong Kong. We have also approached other governments on behalf
of Hong Kong to ask them to take more refugees from Hong Kong.
WHAT HAS BEEN THE RESULT OF YOUR APPROACHES TO GOVERNMENTS TO HELP HONG KONG
12.
We are most grateful to some countries, particularly the USA,
Canada, Australia and the Federal Republic of Germany, who are
accepting Vietnamese refugees from Hong Kong. But the response from
other countries has so far been generally disappointing.
PERMANENT SETTLEMENT OF VIETNAMESE REFUGEES IN HONG KONG
13.
The Hong Kong Government accept for permanent settlement anybody
who is the spouse, dependent child or elderly parent of somebody who
is already a Hong Kong resident. Exceptions can also be made on
humitarian grounds. Since 1975, 10,500 former residents of Vietnam
have been allowed to settle permanently in Hong Kong.
TEMPORARY SETTLEMENT OF VIETNAMESE REFUGEES IN HONG KONG

High Commissioner for Refugees arranges permanent resettlement in
third countries, for any refugees who reach. Hong Kong in their own
boats or who are picked up at sea by vessels for which Hong Kong is the
