N.T.

I thank you for your letter of 17 January 1979 informing me that Her Majesty's Government has agreed to admit to the United Kingdom over the next twelve to fifteen months a further 1,500 Vietnamese "boat refugees" from among those at present in Hong Kong, Malaysia and Thailand. I need hardly state how warmly this Office welcomes the Home Secretary's announcement. The decision of your Government comes at a most opportune time, with more "boat people" than ever before awaiting the chance to resettle in third countries.
