However, one Italian land-owner has been given permission to look
after a family of 5-8 Vietnamese on his farm for one year prior to final settlement in Italy. The family will be taken from Hong Kong.
Norway
Unlikely to be able to help Hong Kong directly (given Norwegian Government's continuing commitment to guarantee resettlement in Norway of refugees picked up at sea by Norwegian registered ships)
but considering the matter.
Sweden
To take 250 overall from South-East Asia. Not yet agreed how these are to be selected or from which territories they are to be drawn.
Considering UK request for help for Hong Kong's backlog.
Irish Republic
Considering admitting a small number overall from South-East Asia
and will consider UK request for help for Hong Kong.
Austria
Will take a further 100 refugees (in addition to 250 previously) from Malaysia and Thailand. Will consider Hong Kong's problem if
Austria decides to admit a further quota.
Switzerland
Will receive 40 to 60 refugees every three months from South-East Asia. Programme closely coordinated with the UNHCR whose recommendations on where refugees are to be drawn from will be taken into account. Due weight to be given to UK request for help for
Hong Kong.
USA
Every effort to be made to assign, over the next six months, and additional 500-600 places in the USA for Vietnamese refugees presently in Hong Kong. (At request of State Department this information not to be revealed).
Denmark
Denmark earmarking 150 places in 1979 for Indo-China boat refugees in addition to commitment in respect of refugees rescued by Danish vessels. Little prospect of immediate help for Hong Kong but deliberations on general problem still in progress.
