1.
VIETNAMESE REFUGEES: PQs
I attach draft replies and a background note to two Parliamentary Questions on the subject of Vietnamese refugees in Hong Kong, put down by Mr John Lee MP (Birmingham Handsworth Labour) for written reply on 15 January and Sir Nigel Fisher MP (Kingston-on-Thames Surbiton Conservative) for oral reply on
17 January.
2.
The Parliamentary Unit have confirmed that, since Sir Nigel Fisher's Question is unlikely to be reached, no supplementaries are required.
3.
The suggested replies are considerably longer than the usual 50 words. This is partly because the information requested cannot easily be condensed without risk of inaccuracy. I also see advantage in providing full answers in order to publicize Hong Kong's problems over Vietnamese refugees, and the humane way in which the Hong Kong Government have been tackling them. The Parliamentary Unit see no objection to this, or to the submission of two very similar replies.
4.
The replies have been prepared in consultation with the Hong Kong Government. UND and SEAD concur.
