A dental conservation service for school children has been

introduced recently. A dental training school for therapists has already started whilst a training school for dentists at the University

of Hong Kong is expected to receive its first intake of students in 1980. Until there is a reasonable provision of dentists in Hong

Kong, a dental scheme for the elderly is not practicable. However,

the Public Assistance scheme will continue to assist the elderly who

are unable to afford fees charged by private dentists, up to a

prescribed level. A list of non-profit making dental clinics operated

by voluntary agencies will also be made available to those in need.

Community Support

4.14

To provide support for old people on their own and for

families with elderly members, the following community services will

be expanded :

(a)

In the current year, the number of home helpers

will be increased to 55, with an additional 40

helpers annually thereafter, subject to a review

in 1982/83. This service does not require a

substantial financial input and if sufficient

workers can be recruited, the Government will

consider a faster rate of expansion.

(b) Day care centres for old people are popular in

other countries as they offer a range of personal

carc, rehabilitative and recreational services on

a non-residential basis. These centres offer a

better alternative to institutional care in that

they encourage the elderly to remain with their
