3) Industrial Noise I have on behalf of the Society interviewed two Commissioners of Labour who have since retired and have written to the present Commissioner of Labour concerning noise induced deafness. I have also, together with other members of my Council, presented this problem to UMELCO. This question has been discussed over a period of 4 or 5 years without any response from Government. There are a good number of noisy industries in Hong Kong. Amongst these are the dockyards, weaving factories, piling, airport and so forth. The immediate past Commissioner of Labour promised to set up a special committee to look into this problem but regretfully, nothing has come out of it as yet.
4) TV captioning
as mentioned in the meeting this morning, the TV stations in Hong Kong have shown absolutely no interest in our suggestions concerning the use of either lettering or as they do in the Philippines, have an actual person interpreting the programme by sign language. We have only requested that certain educational programmes be so captioned, e.g. the news and also in emergency situations, such as typhoons, etc.
I remain,
Yours sincerely,
