1. I submit draft replies and a background note to the attached six Parliamentary Questions tabled by Mr Robert Parry MP (Liverpool,
Scotland Exchange Labour) for written answer on 21 March.
2.
Mr Parry The questions all deal with child labour in Hong Kong: asked 14 questions on the same subject in December 1976, following a television programme on the exploitation of children in the Hong Kong toy industry which aroused considerable interest.
3. In his sixth question, Mr Parry asks what proposals have been
received from TUC or individual trade unions about the abuse of
child labour in Hong Kong. We are not aware of any such proposals. The last time the subject was raised by the TUC appears to have been in July 1974, and even then it was only referred to in passing during a discussion between TUC representatives and the Secretary of State on labour conditions generally in Hong Kong.
4.
Since certain of the questions are very complex, the replies are rather longer than the standard 50 words.
5. The replies are based on information provided by the Hong Kong Government, and have been prepared in consultation with the Overseas
Labour Adviser.
