Maternity Protection
Thank you for your letter of 17th January.
During the past few months we have received a number of representations on this subject from a variety of local bodies. Among these were proposals from the Hong Kong Christian Industrial Committee which are exactly the same as those in the British Council of Churches' letter attached to your letter. At this stage all we would wish to say publicly is that these proposals, together with all others, will be examined as part of our continuing review of labour and social provisions in Hong Kong. I suggest that you should reply to the British Council of Churches in these terms.
For your own information, a Working Group has been set up within the Government to carry out the examination. Its existence and deliberations are being kept confidential.
Since this subject surfaced only recently, it has not yet been reflected in our Branch Quarterly Reports. It will be mentioned in Part II of the current Quarterly Report (November 1978 January 1979) which will reach you in the near future.
Miss R.M. Wills,
your sincery рели
