I am writing in reply to your letter of 10 January about maternity leave in Hong Kong, as Mr Thompson has now left this Department.
The Hong Kong Christian Council is one of a number of local bodies which have recently made representations to the Hong Kong Government about conditions of maternity leave in Hong Kong. At present provisions include leave before and after each confinement; an additional period of leave if disability arises; continuity of service and prohibiting termination of employment during maternity leave. The Govern- ment have informed me that they will be examining the various proposals which they have received in the past few months as part of the continuing and wide ranging review of labour and social provisions in Hong Kong.
