PQ: HONG KONG: MR BOB CRYER
1. I submit a draft reply and background note to the Question tabled by Mr Bob Cryer MP (Keighley Labour) for priority
written answer on 26 October.
2. Mr Cryer referred to Hong Kong labour conditions and ILO Conventions during a debate on Multilateral Trade in the House
of Commons on 29 June. On this, as on a number of occasions, he made clear his strong belief that less stringent labour and safety laws in Hong Kong give Hong Kong manufacturers an unfair advantage over British manufacturers, particularly in the textile industry. It is probably this same point that he is seeking to make with his latest question.
3. The Hong Kong Government and the Overseas Labour Adviser
concur.
