It was most kind of you to telex me on 5 February after the announcement of the award of the rolling stock in the Hong Kong Mass Transit Railway. I need hardly say that all my colleagues. in the Departments concerned have admired the energy and dedication with which you have pursued this opportunity and are delighted that success has crowned your efforts.
Talking with Chris Benjamin after the event we wondered whether you might think it worthwhile, looking to the future, to get together in the not too distant future with him and with me and possibly one or two other colleagues who have been closely involved to look at the forward prospect, whether in China or elsewhere. Chris, in particular, feels that if we could look some distance ahead and could foresee where the constraints on you might be, we might be able to mobilise any support you needed from Government on a rather less hand to mouth basis than we have had to do in relation to KCR and the MTR Phase II.
When you have had an opportunity to think of this perhaps we could discuss the idea.
