Kong. We heard in Hong Kong that the Government were idering various possible sites for building a new and iarger container terminal. But if this is done it would plainly be sensible for the railway system to be extended to link the new facility with the Kowloon-Canton line. We said so on the spot, and Bobby Howes seemed pleased that we had taken the point.

It occurs to me perhaps long after it has occurred to you and your colleagues that there could be something new in this for Transmark, Freightliner and suppliers of railways and dock equipment.

I am therefore sending a copy of this letter to John Page as Chairman of the National Ports Council and to Derek March, our hard-worked Trade Commissioner in Hong Kong. I am sending Derek a second copy in case he thinks it might be hebful to let Bobby Howes see what I have said.

I think we ought to leave it to Derek to advise us on whether, and if so how, the ideas of this letter might be taken further forward, if they are not already in train (to coin a phrase).

I am also sending copies of this Ken Clucas and Michael Palliser.

Best wishes

letter to Peter Carey,
