Dear David
HUA'S REMARKS ABOUT HONG KONG
The
1
In para 6 of your letter of 19 October to Richard Samuel you mention the difference between the Chinese and English official versions of Hua's reply at his press conference. text which you enclosed, and which did not include the word "quite" was, of course, a transcript of parallel remarks on dong one made by Hua in his interview with Felix Greene on 11 September (published by inhua on 17 September).
2. I can confirm, however, that the difference you noted occurred also in the versions of the press conference remarks printed here. Xinhua on 10 October (item 100746) have Hua referring to relations as being "quite good" whilst the People's Daily on 11 October use the expression "shi hao de".
3.
dvance notice was presumably given of Felix Greene's quoption, and we can therefore take Huu's retly to him as representing an unambiguously authentic line.
