The election of a new leader in the citish political arena indicates

that people in the three British isles want A change.

Generally speaking, the political achievement of the former Labour

Goverment is not bad. In recent years, the Labour Government had adopted

measures such as price cóntrol, restrictions on wages through negotiation with

trades unions, support for national enterprises and in particular, intensive

efforts on the development of North Sea oil. These measures not only have

helped the British economy tum for the better but also eased inflation.

However, the restrictions on wages caused discontent among the general workers

who often staged general strikes and violated the restrictions. Since last

winter, slow down of industrial output has returned to Britain and there has

been an ominous sign of a worse inflation. These have caused uneasiness among

British entrepreneurs and financial groups. Under this situation, capitalists

and workers alike thought "why not try a new government?"

Aiming against certain weaknesses in the Labour Party's internal

policy, the Tories put forward a different platform. It advocates restrictions

on the power of trades unions, the cutting of personal income tax, stimulating

investment and de-nationalising entreprises to "create a development trend by

private entreprises." In other words, it facilitates profit-making by capitalists

in free competition. Undoubtedly, these advocacies of the Tory government were

greatly welcomed by wealthy people in Britain who have decisive influence on the general election. This is a reason for the Tories victory in the election.
