1. Lady MacLehose telephoned this morning to ask when

the Governor was likely to be required for consultations in London. She explained that she had been advised on all sides that Sir Murray needed a real break while he was in the UK. She had therefore provisionally arranged a week's fishing at a hotel in the Hebrides. The dates concerned were 15/16 - 23 July, and she now needed to go

firm or cancel.

2. I said that a telegram would shortly be on its way to the Governor if it had not already been despatched. The week beginning 25 June (which we understood was the Governor's preference for meetings in London) would not be convenient because of the absence of the Secretary of State and others at the Tokyo Summit. The Secreta of State might pay some other visits on the way back from Tokyo, but it was not yet clear where he would go or when he would return to London. As things stood, the week beginning 9 July, perhaps the second half, seemed a possibility for meetings with the Governor,

I added that the but we had not yet consulted any Ministers. Governor must have his leave, and we would avoid the week beginning 16 July for meetings and calls. Lady MacLehose said that if it proved impossible to arrange calls before 14 July, Tuesday 24 and Wednesday 25 July (immediately before the Governor's return to Hong Kong) would be feasible though not ideal.
