NOTE OF POINTS FOR THE RECORD MADE DURING MR H A H CORTAZZI'S MEETING WITH THE GOVERNOR OF HONG KONG AT 4.00 PM ON 15 JUNE 1979 IN THE FOREIGN AND COMMONWEALTH OFFICE

1. UK/China Air Services Negotiations

The most Hong Kong could concede on the date by which British Airways should hand their Hong Kong/Peking rights over to Cathay Pacific Airways was four years from the initialling of the Air Services Agreement providing that took place within one month.

2.

Reinforcement of the Hong Kong Garrison

If it was decided to recruit an additional Gurkha Battalion, the Hong Kong Government would pay its share of the training costs in Hong Kong. It would however be up to HMG to decide when the Battalion was used unless the Defence Costs Agreement was involved.

3. New Territories Leases

A final form of words to be put to the Attorney-General was agreed. It was also agreed that a speaking note for HMA Peking to leave with the Chinese MFA should be drafted for discussion on 29 June.
