Mr Murray
GOVERNOR OF HONG KONG
1. Sir Murray MacLehose told me on the telephone yesterday that he had decided not to take leave in the UK this summer. He might take a few days local leave but could not be away for several weeks: there was too much going on. He therefore intended to postpone his main leave until November, after his LEGCO speech. This arrangement would, incidentally, enable him to see his successor - assuming he had been appointed by then- and advise him on briefing and preparation.
2. I said that the change in the Governor's plans would cause no difficulties from our point of view: we had not expected to disturb him during his leave. But I was sorry about the post- ponement -the Governor had earned a break.
