SECRETARY OF STATE'S VISIT TO HONG KONG: RONG:

MARY

11/12 APRIL

1. You asked for recommendations on books to read about Hong Kong. I enclose two books which you might find useful:

2.

(a)

"Borrowed Place, Borrowed Time - Hong Kong and Its Many

Faces" by Richard Hughes. Although published 10 years ago this is still the most readable brief introduction to Hong Kong.

(b) "Hong Kong 1979 - A Review of 1978". This is the

latest edition of the Hong Kong Government's official year book, just published. It is not meant to be read straight through but the various chapters give authoritative accounts of the developments which they cover. It would probably be best to begin with the last two chapters on "History" and "Constitution and Administration".

The Hughes book comes from the FCO Library; Secretary of State may wish to keep the Year Book.

3. Please let me know if you need anything else.
