FIVE FACTORIES TO BE BUILT IN SHEHOU (†)

PLANS FOR PRODUCING LUXURIOUS PLEASURE CRAFT

Five comparatively large-scale industrial plants, including a ship' building yard, a ship scrapping yard, an iron-wire factory, a fibre-glass factory and a cable manufacturing factory, will be set up in the fishing port of Shehou in Shamchun.. The proposed ship building yard will mainly produce luxurious pleasure craft.

The Guangdong authorities concerned have sent officials to the spot to carry out surveying work. Surveying work connected with the construction of a highway is expected to be completed in 12 days. Work on the construction of the highway between Shamchun and Shehou, before the setting up of the factories, will begin in mid-April. The 30-kilometre highway will be an eight-metre wide bitumen road. In order to have the highway completed as early as possible, 3,000 workers will be engaged in the construction work.

The ship building yard, the ship scrapping yard,, the iron-wire factory, the cable factory and the fibre-glass factory will be built in Shehou and Paklai (). These five factories will be set up by a certain large commercial concern under compensation trade arrangements. It is estimated that investment on the first phase development will amount to HK$100 million.

There is a small reservoir in Paklai, with agricultural land nearby. The area is quite large and is an ideal place to set up

factories.

Shehou, located just opposite Lau Fau Shan, is a small fishing port, where land and sea transport are convenient. It has a population of about 10,000 fishing folks with more than 1,000 fishing junks. The

Guangdong navigation authorities have sent a team to survey the seabed

off Shehou in preparation for the construction of the ship building yard.
