A traveller reported in February 1979 that a plan to develop modern wharf and cargo handling facilities in Mirs Bay had been dropped because of cost. The plan was now to develop Shekou. This seems to be confirmed by an article in the Communist Hsin Wan Pao on 9 March, which spoke of factories as well as a ship building and scrapping yard being
developed at Shekou.
Power Supply Development

In October 1978 a traveller reported that a thermal power plant was to be constructed at Shekou, which would supply electricity to the whole of Baoan County; it was to operate with equipment brought from North Point, Hong Kong. However, according to the Wen Wei Pao of 22 February, until such time as this equipment was in operation, Shenzhen would be supplied with electricity from the China Light and Power Company. This supply was due to start on 1 April this year. In an earlier article the same newspaper said that the linking of the company's power station at Fanling with the Shenzhen network could cater for the entire present needs of
Shenzhen and Baoan County.
