Premier about China's expanding population and Zhou talked about the Chinese Government's encouragement of birth control. Zhou also talked about Taiwan and Britain's attitude towards China at the United Nations. On Hong Kong, Zhou raised the incident of the "Kashmir Princess" (sabotaged in April 1955 when a time-bomb was planted on the aircraft at Kai Tak) and became heated on the subject of deportations of communist trouble-makers from Hong Kong. Zhou also used the occasion to express his Government's extreme displeasure at the Portuguese authorities' plans to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the founding of the Colony of Macau. The Governor later spoke to the Governor of Macau about the Chinese Government's disquiet, and the Portuguese authorities cancelled the entire programme of celebrations.

Zhou Enlai was later to claim (in a conversation with Mr Harold Wilson, 25 February 1958) that he had also discussed the restoration of a through-train service between Guangzhou and Hong Kong and had reiterated the Chinese request for Chinese official representation in Hong Kong. Sir Alexander Grantham makes no reference to these topics in his recollection.
