Itinerary and background of visit, the first official visit to China by a Governor since 1949.
The official invitation was the culmination of a long series of steps towards normalisation lasting over a period of years.
In addition to showing a major forward move in Hong Kong/Chinese relations, the object of the visit was to learn details of the modernisation programmes affecting Hong Kong, and also to explain action we propose to take about New Territories leases written to expire in July 1997.

The party was given exceptionally good treatment throughout the visit, and in Peking was received by Vice Minister Deng Xiaoping, Foreign Minister Huang Hua, Mr Liao Chengzhi, as well as the nominal host, the Minister of Foreign Trade, Mr Li Qiang.
The party's return to Hong Kong was on the first "through train from Guangzhou to Hong Kong since the revolution.
The Chinese were surprisingly frank in their briefing over modernisation plans and about their continuing need of Hong Kong's role in achieving them.
