18. We have noted the communications that both China and
the Soviet Union may be interested in holding talks on
their bi-lateral relations. We welcome this as we welcome
any moves towards a reduction of tension in the area.

The Government are examining ways of protecting
the interests of United Kingdom citizens and companies
Nationals
in Taiwan since the closure of the United States Embassy
in Taiwan at the end of February.
We are confident that
satisfactory arrangements can be made and these will be
announced in due course.
