4. The Government do not propose to supply any military

equipment to China which will upset the strategic balance.

We do not consider that any sales which might be approved

should affect the process of detent to which we attach

great importance.

HAS SALE BEEN PUT TO COCOM

5. My honourable Friend will not expect me to disclose

whether individual cases have been submitted to COCOM for

formal consideration. To reveal details of confidential 'inter Gover

ink-Government exchange which took place within the context

of committee would jeopardize the effectiveness of our

organisation to which we continue to attach importance.

VISIT OF PREMIER HUA GUOFENG

6. We hope to receive Premier Hua in this country in

October. Such a visit would make a major contribution to

the further improvement of our bi-lateral relations. But

I am not in a position to make any formal announcement

at present.

DUKE OF KENT'S VISIT TO CHINA

7. HRH the Duke of Kent's visit to China was highly successful

as the first visit by a member of the Royal Family it had a

particular significance and reflected the healthy state of

our bi-lateral relationship.

FURTHER ROYAL VISITS TO CHINA

8. The Government would welcome, and support, further visits

by members of the Royal Family to China. But no firm

arrangements have yet been made. The question will require

further serious consideration.
