I am very sorry that it has taken me so long to reply to your letter of June so kindly inviting me to participate in the Seminar on the future of British dependencies.

I would very much have wished to accept this invitation as I am particularly interested in the subject; unfortunately, the timing is a little inconvenient for me. I already had a commitment for that period and immediately made enquiries to see whether I could change that one. Before I received a response I had to leave for Africa where I was visiting Zambia and Kenya until last week.

Now it does seem that it would be difficult for me to change other arrangements in order to attend the Seminar and so I fear that I must very reluctantly decline your invitation. Thank you very much for inviting me.

Yours sincerely,

Tim Read.

Professor Jim Read.
