Mr A E Clarke, Hong Kong & General Department
SEMINAR ON THE FUTURE OF BRITAIN'S REMAINING DEPENDENCIES
Thank you for your minute of 23 August, which was awaiting me on return from leave today, about the possibility of my making a visit to IDS during the seminar which the FCO is organising at IDS between 24-26 September.
2. Mr Gee (who was a colleague of mine over many years in HMOCS) is anxious that I should pay a visit to IDS before the current review of the future of the Institute has progressed to the point of reaching conclusions; and he suggested the week beginning 24 September partly because he thought the subject of the seminar would be of interest to me and partly because it would be indicative of the activities of the IDS beyong the normal courses for participants from developing countries. I therefore propose to ask Mr Gee if I could make this visit on Tuesday, 25 September; and if this is convenient to IDS I would welcome the opportunity of sitting in on either the pre-lunch session or the first afternoon session of the FCO seminar. I have certainly no wish to be regarded as an official participant but would only be visiting for the one day, probably travelling by car. I hope this will be acceptable to your department as the organisers of the seminar.
