All briefs should be self-contained, with abbreviations spelt out the first time they are used. Length: as short as possible preferably not exceeding 3 pages.
All briefs should be cleared as necessary in the FCO and elsewhere before submission.

As above, but, "Brief by Foreign and Commonwealth Office" to be typed under subject. Classification (not higher than Confidential) to be typed top and bottom. "Foreign and Commonwealth Office" and date to be at the end of the brief in the bottom left-hand corner.
