TUVALU
1
The present Constitution came into effect initially on
1 October 1975 with the separation of Tuvalu, formerly the Ellice Islands, from the Gilbert Islands, although the Constitution has been amended slightly in both 1977 and 1978 to allow more responsibility to fall on the elected representa- tives as independence approaches.
Elections for the House of Assembly were held in August 1977: the House consists of twelve elected hembers and the Attorney General ex-officio.
The Territory is administered by Hi Commissioner with a Cabinet including the Chief Minister (elected by and from the House of Assembly), three other elected Ministers and the Attorney General ex-officio.
