Extension of Governor's Tour
As an interesting footnote to the news last night that the Governor's tour would be extended by two years, you might be interested to know that the 2nd Director of the NCNA, LI Jusheng, telephoned me this morning. This in itself is an unusual event since telephone, as opposed to personal, contact with the NCNA is always carried out on their side by underlings. Unfortunately, having thus broken with tradition, he hit a morning when I was away from the office. Nevertheless, he passed on to Iain Orr the burden of his message, which was that Wang Kuang, the 1st Director, was delighted to hear about the Governor's extension. It was, LI said, "good news" (hao xiao-xi).

LI is due to leave Hong Kong the day after tomorrow to take the local delegation to the National Day celebrations. He clearly wanted to get this message across before then and do so in a way which was more than usually friendly.
