1. I should be grateful if you would kindly up-date the job. description of the post of Governor of Hong Kong. This will then form part of the brief to be distributed to members of the Dependent Territories Senior Appointments Board, which will be required to give its formal approval to the appointment of whoever is selected for the job. We shall need to consult the Board even if the present Governor's term of office is extended.

I attach a copy of the job description prepared for use in 1977. For the sake of uniformity with our other job descriptions it would be helpful if the following headings could be used:-

1. The Territory
(a) Background (Constitutional and Political Position
of the Territory)
(b) kesources controlled by the Territory
(c) Security (Internal and Lxternal Problems)
2. The Governor
(a) Liscretion for Executive Decision
(b) Involvement in the Judicial Process
(c) Spcial qualities required
It would be very helpful if I could have the new job description not later than 2 April.
