As you know, Mr McEntee's term as Governor of Belize is due to expire this year. He has indicated his willingness to stay on until the end of the year or the beginning of 1980, but he will need to be replaced then. The appointment will be on the agenda of the Dependent Territories Senior Appointments Board which is planned for 6 June.
2.
Mr McEntee is a member of the Diplomatic Service, as was his predecessor, Mr Posnett, but both of them had extensive dependent territories experience before joining the Diplomatic bervice. We have hitherto assumed that it would be right to think in terms of another Diplomatic Service officer with a dependent territories background. However, I understand an election is due in Belize later this year; that Mr Price may be defeated; that the new Government may be less interested in early independence; and that there may therefore be a case for appointing an experienced colonial administrator, or at least for considering suitably qualified HMOCS candidates.
3. I should be grateful for your views.
