GOVERNOR BELIZE
1. Mr McEntee called on me today and I asked him whether he yet had a definite date for the end of his term as Governor. He Said that everything depended on the General Election in Belize since he thought it advisable to stay in office to cover the period leading up to this event. With this in mind, the earliest date for his departure would be the end of December 1979 but he might need to stay on until the end of February 1980. There was a remote chance that it might be even longer than this. Mr McEntee promised to send us a telegram as soon as he had a definite date. I said that we would therefore make the proposed extension of his term of duty open ended. The Palace were usually quite amenable to this providing some good reason was given.
