MARK EVELYN HEATH

Mr Heath was born on 22 May 1927 and educated at Marlborough and Queen's College, Cambridge. From 1945-48 he served in the Royal Navy as a Sub-Lieutenant.

He joined the Diplomatic Service in 1950 serving in the FO, Jakarta, Copenhagen, Sofia, Ottawa before being promoted to Grade 4 in 1970 as Head of Commodities Department in the FCO. He then went to our delegation to the OECD in Paris as Counsellor and Head of Chancery. From 1974 to 1975 he served in the Defence and Overseas Secretariat of the Cabinet Office. From 1975 to 1978 he was head of FCO West African Department and non-resident Ambassador to Chad. Since 1978 he has been in the Inspectorate.

He is married with two sons and one daughter. His youngest child is aged 20.

Mr Heath has wide all round experience in the Diplomatic Service. Both as a representative abroad and as a policy maker in London he has done well. An imposing figure (he is 6'8") his personality enables him to establish easy and fruit- ful relationships with colleagues and foreigners alike. has good political sense, good powers of decision and mental toughness; this last quality showed to good advantage in his present job in the Inspectorate. Like the present Governor of the Falkland Islands, however, he has had no previous colonial experience.
