Pay and Allowances

1. The post equates to Diplomatic Service Grade 3.

Timing of the Appointment

The present Governor took up his appointment in December 1976. He reaches the end of his term (and will be 60) in December 1979.

Requirements of the Post

3. The Governor must be able to win the confidence of a strong minded and conservative community which has close links with the United Kingdom. His primary diplomatic task of gaining acceptance for HMG's policies requires much political skill, tact and patience.

In the farming community atmosphere of the islands, he must be prepared to spend a good deal of his time circulating and getting to know the people. The need is for a practical administrator with diplomatic experience.

4. (i) R M Hunt: Aged 52.

Diplomatic Service Grade 4.

1951-63 HMOCS Uganda. Since

1963 CRO, later Diplomatic Service, serving in Kuching, Jesselton, Brunei, Ankara, Jakarta, Saigon and various departments in London. Currently Counsellor (Commercial), Kuala Lumpur. (See Biographical Note at Annex C.)

(ii) M E Heath: Aged 52

Diplomatic Service Grade 4. Joined the Foreign Service in 1950 and has served in Jakarta, Copenhagen, Sofia, Ottawa, Paris (OECD), and various departments in London, including

secondment to the Cabinet Office. Currently serving in the Inspectorate. (See Biographical Note at Annex D.)
