The normal three-year term of office of the Governor and Commander-in-Chief of Belize, Mr P D McEntee CMG OBE, expired at the end of last month.
The Foreign and Commonwealth Secretary has been con- sidering what future arrangements would be best. A General Election is due in Belize around the end of November. Mr McEntee's experience and local knowledge would be particularly useful over the period of the election and during the new Government's first few weeks. He has expressed his willingness to stay on if required. Lord Carrington therefore considers that it would be desirable if Mr McEntee's appointment were extended until the end of 1979 or early 1980.
Lord Carrington would be grateful to know whether this proposal meets with Her Majesty's approval.
I will be writing to you shortly about the appointment of a successor to Mr McEntee.
