think that this results from any particularly strong devotion to me; it is more a matter, I suppose, of being the known devil. I have, lately, dropped quiet hints that my time is running out; it has firmly come back to me that the Islanders would resent any break in continuity at this stage. They feel that in the past several years there has been too much of a turnover in Governors and would like to see some stability in this area of their affairs.

5. What all this adds up to is that I feel I should offer to stay on for another year beyond this one, unless policy, tactics, or regulations require otherwise. If they do, I shall fold my tents around November next, and try quietly to steal away. I would be grateful to know what you, and others in the Office concerned, think about this.
