1. In your minute of 21 May you suggested that a decision on BMr Parker's request to be allowed to remain as Governor in the
Falklands for a further year should be deferred until after Mr Ridley's visit there in July. I subsequently had a word with Mr Hall, explaining that ir Parker's replacement 593 due to be selected at the DTSAB meeting on 5 June. Kr Hall agreed that the question should be put to the Board as planned, and, that it would be for Ministers to decide whether or not they wished to approve a successor for Mr Parker in advance of Mr Ridley's visit.

2. At the DTSAB meeting it was agreed that Mr R M Hunt should be recommended for appointment as Mr Parker's successor. (No-one mentioned Mr Parker's willingness to stay on, though several members of the Board were aware of it). We will now submit the Board's recommendations to the Secretary of State through Mr Hurd (with a copy for hir Ridley). It is possible that one or other Minister may suggest that approval for Mr Hunt's appointment be deferred until after the Ridley visit. But I hope you will agree that there is no need to put this idea into Ministers' heads,
3. In the meantime we need to reply to ir Parker's letter of 15 May. I attach a draft, cleared with POD, and would be grateful for your comments.
