This note defines the circunstances in which the British Government will be prepared to eat from 0.S.A.3. funds its appropriate share of the cost of a passage granted to a designated officer on compassionate grounds. The grant of a passage on compassionate grounds is a malter for the discretion of the oversees government which employs the designated officer concerned.

Compassionate passages for designated officers

2. The British Government is prepared to contribute towards the cost of a compassionate passage granted to enable a designated officer to visit his country of origin in the case of the dangerous illness or death of a close relative 1.e. a wife, a child of the marriage (including a step child or adopted child), a parent, a recognised next of kin or legal guardian. In the case of dangerous illness, medical confirmation must be obtained that the officer's presence is necessary. In the care of the death of an officer's parent, recognized next of kin (other than his wife or a child of the marriage) or legal guardian, it must be established that there is no other relative in the country of origin capable of handling the situation. Compassionate passages may also be granted in causs of serious domestic hardship, where prior welfare investigations show that there are urgent reasons to attend to matters which can be resolved by a short visit to the country of origin.

Compassionate passages for the vives of designated officers

3. The British Government is also prepared to contribute towards the cost of a compassionate passage for the wife of a designated officer, who is present at the overseas post with her husband, in the following circumstances:-

(a) in the event of a dangerous illness or death of their

child in the country of origin: in this way both parents may visit their child in the event of dangerous illness or attend their child's funeral at public expense;

(b) in the event of the dangerous illness or death of one of

her parents or of her legal guordion. In the case of dangerous illness, medical confiruation must be obtained that her presence is necessary, and in the case of death it qust be established that there is no other relative capable of handling the situation;

(c) the wife of a dsignated officer who is crented a

compassionate passage may be accompanied, at public expense, by her children under the age of two years.
